Who this tour is for
- Visitors who want a fun, story-driven introduction to Winnipeg—not just dates and facts
- Locals curious to see their city in a completely new way
- Anyone who enjoys surprising, entertaining stories—and doesn’t mind having their assumptions about Winnipeg overturned
- All ages welcome, though the tour discusses some adult content—easy, comfortable walking distances throughout
What you’ll experience
A booming city with a scandalous past. Between 1876 and 1910, Winnipeg grew from a small village into one of Canada’s largest cities—but behind the wealth and rapid growth was a reputation for vice, crime, and intrigue. Things were so bad, the YMCA named us the “wickedest city in Canada.”
Booming, brash, and sometimes brazenly corrupt, Winnipeg was a place where the police chief got caught in his own brothel raid, the first mayor spent his nights in the drunk tank, and a radio announcer accidentally swore live on air in front of the King.
Fun stories guests love
The forgotten, edgier side of Winnipeg history
We’ve dug deep to find the stories you won’t hear anywhere else—the ones most Winnipeggers don’t even know. Here’s just a taste of what you’ll hear:
- The tale of our first mayor, who once kidnapped his political opponent
- The amusing story of the first time someone swore on Canadian radio
- The Winnipeg criminal who pulled off one of the biggest gold heists in Canadian history—then got caught because of a snowstorm
- Why Manitoba’s most famous symbol, the Golden Boy, is a veteran of the First World War
Funny, surprising, and completely true. This is Winnipeg history the way it deserves to be told.
Go inside the must-see Manitoba Legislative Building
Step inside “the Leg”—one of the most beautiful government buildings in North America—and hear the secrets the free tours leave out: the hidden temple, the sphinx on the roof, and why the building’s famous Golden Boy statue is a war veteran. You’ll enjoy a guided interior visit and have time to look around on your own, so you can check this must-see stop off your Winnipeg bucket list.
Please bring government-issued photo ID (all guests 18+)—it’s required to enter the building.
Local guides who feel like friends
There’s a reason we’ve been Winnipeg’s #1 tour company on Tripadvisor since 2012—our guides are warm, knowledgeable, and passionate about Winnipeg history and culture. Expect engaging stories, laughs, and the kind of hospitality that feels like exploring the city with a friend. You’d be surprised how many locals leave having learned things they never knew about their own city.
A comfortable pace, with seating available. Our groups are small, the walking distance is short, and we find places to sit at most stops, so you won’t be standing for the full 90 minutes.
After the tour, our guides are happy to point you toward their favourite places to eat, drink, and explore, so you can make the most of the rest of your day.
